Gisela Dulko to play doubles with Paola Suarez until London 2012 Olympic Games

We got great news today for Argentina´s tennis… Paola Suarez announced today in a press conference that she returns to the tennis tour to play doubles with Gisela Dulko at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London.

Suarez told the press that she was asked by Dulko in March 2012 about playing doubles together, after thinking about it, she said no but last November she changed her mind and started training again 7 weeks ago.

Dulko and Pennetta Set To Defend Australian Open Title

Twelve months ago, not one of the 64 teams in the draw in for the Australian Open women’s doubles competition had a Grand Slam title to their name. This time around five pairings enter the tournament knowing what it takes to go all the way and each will be confident of lifting the year’s first major.

Last year, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta emerged victorious in Melbourne, capturing their first Grand Slam with a three set comeback victory – they trailed 62 41 – over Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko in the final. Dulko and Pennetta open their defense against Irina Falconi and Rebecca Marino, with a potential rematch against Kirilenko, and her partner Nadia Petrova, scheduled for the quarterfinals.

Also in the bottom half of the draw is the vastly experienced team of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond. Seeded No.2 in Melbourne, the American duo were the WTA’s standout team in the second half of 2011, winning at Toronto, Tokyo and the US Open, before rounding off their year with victory at the season-ending WTA championships in Istanbul. Huber and Raymond kick off their title bid on Wednesday against Anabel Medina Garrigues and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Top seeds Down Under are Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. The reigning Wimbledon champions arrive at Melbourne Park fresh from a confidence-boosting victory over Huber and Raymond last week in Sydney and will be looking to improve upon last year’s run to the semi-finals. First up for the Czech-Slovene duo are Angelique Kerber and Christina McHale.

Scheduled semifinal opponents for Peschke and Srebotnik are No.3 seeds Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova. Although King and Shvedova have being playing together since 2010, this is their first Australian Open in tandem, but after reaching the final of the last two US Opens they will be confident of making a successful debut on the Australian hardcourts. King and Shvedova take on Germany’s Kristina Barrios and Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the first round and are seeded to face 2011 Roland Garros champions Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the quarterfinals.

First round matches get underway on Wednesday, with the final scheduled for Friday, January 27.

Maria Sharapova beats Gisela Dulko at Australian Open 2012

Maria Sharapova marched into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday with a ruthless 6-0 6-1 victory over Agrentina’s Gisela Dulko in just 58 minutes.

The 24-year-old Russian had been heading for a ‘double bagel’ 6-0 6-0 victory until she temporarily lost control of her serve in the third game of the second set and was broken.

Dulko, who had beaten Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2009 in their only other meeting, punched the air in delight after winning the game while the crowd on the second show court of Hisense Arena gave her a massive cheer and sustained applause.

Sharapova, however, was not prepared to stay on court any longer than she had to in the intense heat, breaking Dulko’s next two service games and while the Argentine had three break points when the fourth seed was serving for the match she was unable to stave off the inevitable.

Istanbul Doubles Draw Revealed

The doubles event at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships – Istanbul 2011 will be full of players who fans know quite well. In fact, three of the four duos and seven of the eight participants are the same as last year’s season finale in Doha, with the only difference being Lisa Raymond is now with Liezel Huber instead of Rennae Stubbs. This year’s four teams have combined for five of the last six Grand Slam titles, and the eight participants have seven WTA Championships between them and 19 majors.

If they play anything like they have for most of this season, Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik should be the favorites. They have been very consistent, compiling a 53-13 match record in 20 events, and have made nine finals, winning a WTA-best six of those, including their first Slam at Wimbledon.

“Kveta and I are so happy to have made it to the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships for the second year in a row as a team,” Srebotnik said after she and Peschke became the first team to qualify in September. “It’s a really special event and something we aim for every season. We’ve had a great year so far and now we’re looking forward to finishing 2011 off in Istanbul and trying to win the title.”

Peschke and Srebotnik’s semifinal foes on Saturday will be Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova. Although the American-Kazak duo didn’t quite mimic last year’s success when they won two majors, they still captured two titles in 2011, most recently just last week in Moscow. They also were runners-up three times, including at the US Open.

Huber and Raymond have the edge over all the other competitors when it comes to experience, as Huber has won this event twice and Raymond three times. This will be their first time playing as a duo, though, and in fact this was their first season playing any event together. After a slow start they captured three titles from August on, including the US Open, and had a 12-match winning streak – second only to Peschke and Srebotnik’s 14 – for longest of the year. The Americans’ final four opponents in Istanbul will be Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta.

While Dulko and Pennetta also did not top their 2010 campaign when they won a WTA-best seven titles, highlighted by the WTA Championships, they did pick up their first major at the Australian Open. Also, they have heated up recently, reaching finals in Tokyo and Beijing.

One team that did not make the Istanbul field but ended their season (other than Fed Cup) on a strong note was Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. The Czechs captured their fourth title of the year last week in Luxembourg, where they were also titlists in 2009 and runners-up in 2010.
