La mejor dupla del mundo se coronó por primera vez en un Grand Slam luego de vencer a Azarenka-Kirilenko en una final que parecía perdida: 2-6, 7-5 y 6-1.
Eran las 22 en Melbourne (apenas las 8 de ayer en la Argentina), cuando las flamantes campeonas del Abierto de Australia volvieron al hotel luego de un día largo. Ya habían celebrado su primer Grand Slam tras vencer en una épica final a Victoria Azarenka y Maria Kirilenko por 2-6, 7-5 y 6-1 (salvaron dos break points que las hubiesen sepultado 1-5 en el segundo). Hicieron la sesión de fotos con la copa, pasaron por la rueda de prensa, por el obligatorio antidoping y se sentaron en el club a descansar para hablar un rato y ponerle una pausa a todos los asuntos protocolares.
Ya en su habitación, Gisela Dulko se apartó de su compañera Flavia Pennetta y atendió por teléfono a Olé , que le postergó unos minutos la celebración. “No hay problema, después vamos a festejar: a comer unas pizzas y a tomar un champagne con todo el equipo, je”, contó la tigrense, con un tono que delataba alegría.

Luego de que la pareja de dobles de Gisela Dulko y Flavia Pennetta consiguiera su primer Grand Slam, la argentina develó que tras un 2010 soñado, “este año era el objetivo principal”.
“Estamos acá en la habitación comiendo pizza”, detalló Gisela Dulko. En una entrevista con TN, la argentina contó que junto a su compañera de dobles Flavia Pennetta, con quien acaba de conseguir el primer Grand Slam de sus carreras, “somos mejores amigas. Las últimas horas fueron de loco, no paramos. Mucha prensa, muchas fotos, también nos hicimos el control antidoping. Todavía no pudimos relajarnos mucho”.
Tras la presentación y la narración de lo que habían sido las últimas horas del mejor dúo de dobles femenino, Dulko aseguró que “este año un Grand Slam era el objetivo principal ya que el 2010 no pudo terminar mejor con el número uno y con el Master”. Aún así, reconoció que el cumplimiento del propósito llegó “más rápido de lo esperado” y que fue “lo mejor que me pasó”.

Gisela Dulko y la italiana Flavia Penetta, la pareja n°1 del mundo, se dieron el gran gusto y se llevaron el primer Grand Slam de su carrera tras derrotar a la dupla integrada por la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka y la rusa Maria Kirilenko por 2-6, 7-5 y 6-1.
Su Abierto de Australia había comenzado de un modo muy particular. Ponerle en primera ronda a Caroline Wozniacki era casi condenarla, por buscarle el lado positivo, a poner su cabeza en el torneo de dobles. De lleno.
Por algo había que revalidar, a pesar de ser la 52° del mundo entre las mujeres, porque era la 1° con una compañera al lado y no enfrente. Claro que tuvo que esperar hasta la 4° ronda del Abierto de Australia para que su amiga y colega italiana Flavia Pennetta (25° en singles, 2° en dobles) quedase out ante Petro Kvitova y para que el camino quedase allanado hacia el único objetivo importante que le/s quedaba en su historial: un Grand Slam.

Last year they won seven titles together and finished the season as the No.1 team in the world, but there was one jewel missing in their crown – a Grand Slam title. That all changed at the Australian Open, as Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta won their first major – just barely, though.
Seeded No.1 and having lost just 26 games in five straight set wins en route to the final, Dulko and Pennetta seemed the heavy favorites for the title; but No.12 seeds Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko had built up quite a reputation of their own, losing just 25 games en route to the final (although they did lose one set) and beating two higher-seeded teams in straight sets, including No.2 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik in the semifinal round.

Staring down the barrel of almost certain defeat, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta staged a remarkable comeback to claim their first major doubles crown as a team and validate their top seeding.
In their first Grand Slam doubles final, the Argentine-Italian duo found themselves trailing 2-6, 1-4 against No.12 seeds Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko, before drawing on their vast reserves of experience and confidence to storm back and claim a memorable 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory.
It was a glamorous match up, and the tennis proved highly entertaining as well. Women’s doubles has progressively gone the way of its singles counterpart and is now played predominantly from the baseline, but today it was refreshing to see the four women willing to attack the net and employ tried-and-true doubles tactics throughout the two hour and 11 minute match.

Q. What did you tell yourself when you were a set and break down? How did you turn it around?
GISELA DULKO: Well, we were like in shock. I think a set and 4 1 down, in the changeover, we were like looking each other and saying, C’mon, we play less than an hour. We cannot finish the match playing less than an hour in the final.
I don’t know. We just tried to went for it, don’t try to wait for them, try to play more aggressive. Because I think till this moment we couldn’t find a good way to play, to win the match. So we just keep fighting and trying.
FLAVIA PENNETTA: And she was playing unbelievable three games. From 4 1 was playing unbelievable.
Q. Could you feel the momentum change when you started getting on top?
