Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta claimed the women’s doubles title at the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open after prevailing over No. 3 seeds Nadia Petrova and Samantha Stosur 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 on Sunday afternoon in Miami.
“We were I think both of us nervous,” said Dulko. “We wanted to win the title bad. It was just a little bit of nerves in the tie-break. So I think we play good at the end. We maybe hit more first serves in. Maybe one or two less mistakes and we won the tie-break.”
The Argentine-Italian duo upset three seeded teams en route to the title, including No. 2 Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the second round and No. 4 Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs in the semi-finals.
Dulko and Pennetta, who were making their 15th main draw appearance as a team, have now won four titles together in six finals. They won the 2006 Bogota title on their partnership debut and also claimed a pair of titles in 2009 at Hobart and Bastad.
Dulko said: “It’s my first big tournament with Flavia. We won a few titles before, but this is the most important. It feels great. We enjoy a lot this week. We had such a tough draw.”
Petrova and Stosur finished as runners-up for the second straight tournament, having lost to Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik two weeks ago at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
