Three first-round exits in her last four tournaments did not exactly give Gisela Dulko a jolt of confidence coming into the US Open.
In fact, Dulko, who had never surpassed the second round in five prior Flushing Meadows appearances, entered the event with limited expectations.
“Not at all. I didn’t feel good at all (coming in),” Dulko said. “I didn’t feel well in many matches during the summer, but you know I’ve been practicing hard to come here and play good tennis.”
The positive approach has paid off as Dulko dominated 30th-seeded Alona Bondarenko, 6-4, 6-0, in 67 minutes to reach the US Open third round for the first time.

Two of the most beautiful tennis players, Maria Sharapova and Gisela Dulko will meet in Chile and in Argentina to play some exhibition matches in December 2009.
Maria Sharapova, former WTA number one and now ranked 49, will come to South America for the first time in December to play an exhibition with Gisela Dulko in the central stadium of Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis in Argentina and in Chile.
The meeting in Argentina will take place on 6 December and will mark the end of a tour that Sharapova will held for the first time in South America.
Sharapova will first go to Chile, where she will also play against Dulko, then she will stop in Brazil and finally in Argentina.

Antes del partido entre Gisela Dulko y Maria Sharapova, el diario The Times tituló: “La batalla de las nenas”. Y ganó la nena argentina. Una nena no tan nena, claro. O, en todo caso, una nena como la que interpretaba Adriana Brodsky en el sketch del Manosanta, un jolgorio de hormonas, un fenomenal despliegue de minifaldas.
A los 24 años, Gisela se destaca por su tenis ciertamente en alza y, también, por sus encantos fuera de la cancha. Rubia debilidad, y si bien se encarga de aclarar que se encuentra “sola”, la tigrense ha mantenido apasionados romances con, por ejemplo, el chileno Fernando González -¿será por eso que le dicen el Bombardero de La Reina?- y los españoles Tommy Robredo y Fernando Verdasco. Así explica Gisela su afinidad por los hombres de la raqueta: “Nuestra vida va a full, yo voy a full, cuando vengo a Buenos Aires no paro un segundo. Me entreno, me entreno, me entreno, pero tengo que hacerme un tiempo para ir al dentista, al médico, a ver a mi familia, a mis amigas”, le dijo a la revista Brando. “Si tuviera un novio que fuera de acá, no le podría dar mucha bola. Para mí, estar con un tenista fue un poco más fácil porque hacíamos lo mismo. Además, lo podía ver en los torneos”.
