Just when Ana Ivanovic insisted it is time for tennis to be fun and rewarding for her again, the former world No 1 suffered the most agonizing of set-backs as she was pitched out of the Australian Open in only the second round.
Optimism was supposedly the order of the day for the photogenic Serb who looked a world beater just 18 months ago by winning the French Open. Not only has she recently found love with Australian golfer Adam Scott but she maintains her repeated injury problems are a thing of the past, and with renewed fitness she stressed a determination to return to women’s tennis elite.
However Gisela Dulko, Argentine and equally suited to monopolizing the photographers’ attention, has developed a reputation for ruining the comebacks of those tennis stars who are perfectly at home on the front page of a glossy magazine. Last year at Wimbledon she sent Maria Sharapova home in the second round and the story was the same for Ivanovic as the 2008 Australian Open finalist suffered her earliest exit at the tournament in six attempts.
Dulko required six match points to finish the job as tension pervaded after the unseeded player from Buenos Aires had allowed a double break of serve in the concluding set before finally rounding out her victory 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Desde las 21 hora de Argentina, Dulko tendrá un compromiso más que complicado frente a la serbia Ana Ivanovic, 20ma. cabeza de serie, quien en su debut derrotó con comodidad a la estadounidense Shenay Perry por 6-2 y 6-3.
Dulko, en tanto, debió sufrir bastante antes de vencer a la eslovaca Zuzana Kucova por 6-0, 5-7 y 7-5, y tendrá un partido complicadísimo ante Ivanovic, ex número uno del mundo.

Gisela Dulko fue derrotada 6-0 y 6-0 por Kateryna Bondarenkoa en los octavos de final del Abierto de Estados Unidos.
Dulko dijo que se trató “de un día negro” que le imposibilitó “entrar en el partido”.
“No fue un buen día. Fue un día negro para mí y nunca entré en el partido. Ella estuvo sólida pero sobre todo yo nunca entré en juego. No fueron los nervios porque no lo estaba, pero fue un mal día. Tengo que quedarme con lo hecho hasta cuarta ronda. Intentar quedarme con los positivo porque si no, me hundo”, dijo Dulko.

Fue 6-2, 3-6 y 6-4 en la segunda ronda del Grand Slam inglés. La rusa (24º preclasificada, ganó este torneo en 2004 y fue semifinalista en 2005 y 2006. La próxima rival de la argentina será Nadia Petrova (10º).
Gisela Dulko consiguió hoy la victoria más importante de su carrera al derrotar a la rusa María Sharapova (24º preclasificada) por 6-2, 3-6 y 6-4 en la cancha central y avanzar a la tercera ronda de Wimbledon. Con este triunfo, la argentina ya igualó su mejor actuación en este torneo (también había ganado dos partidos en 2004 y 2008) y tendrá la chance de alcanzar la segunda semana cuando enfrente a otra rusa: Nadia Petrova (10º).
Sólo diez minutos necesitó Gisela Dulko para darse cuenta de que hoy podía ser su gran día. El desafío era muy grande. Para ganarle a la ex número del mundo, campeona de Wimbledon en 2004 y semifinalista en 2005 y 2006, necesitaba una señal desde el comienzo. Y la tuvo. En esos diez minutos la argentina ganó la misma cantidad de games que había rescatado en los dos enfrentamientos previos con la rusa (6-0 y 6-1 en San Diego 2004 y doble 6-1 en Doha 2005, ambos en octavos de final).
